I'm obviously not Julesy, but I found the Canon 1000D a really good starting camera [link] and as starting camera's go it's pretty good but it's always good to go have a look at the cameras in store as some people find Nikon cameras more comfortable [link]
If you are wanting to do Macro photography, I would recommend getting macro filters instead of lenses as you can get a similar effect about about 1/10 of the cost [link]
